About the Waitaki Archive
Waitaki Archive was created and launched in 1987 to recognise a need to protect the valuable documentary material and records of Waitaki District. The Archive has grown over the years and now collects important records about the community of Waitaki District. These records include photographs, records of local clubs and societies, records of local businesses and individuals, local school records and newspapers.
Accessing the Archive
Archives are stored carefully in a secure, climate-controlled area. Archive assistance is available during the following times:
Tuesday 10am to 1pm
Friday 10am to 1pm
Last Saturday each month 10am – 12.30pm
Other times by appointment, please email archive@waitaki.govt.nz
We recommend that you contact us beforehand to ensure the best possible service and access. If you have a detailed research enquiry, prior contact is essential.
Note: Some archives contain private information about individuals and as such restrictions on access apply. Please contact the archive to find out if restrictions apply to your particular query.
Family history and reference material
The Archive has a wealth of information that can help you in finding your ancestors. The local Oamaru Branch of the NZ Genealogists has voluntarily created many indices which make searching our collections easier. These can be accessed in the Archive reading room during opening hours.
Donating to Waitaki Archive
For potential donations to the Waitaki Museum & Archive, please contact archive@waitaki.govt.nz in the first instance. Please provide information about the material, along with photographs or other relevant images where possible.
All potential donations are considered in accordance with the Waitaki Museum & Archive’s collection policy, which guides decisions regarding the acceptance and acquisition of material.
The Archivist will assess the proposed donation and, where appropriate, present it to the next acquisitions committee meeting for consideration.
Waitaki District Archive is funded by Waitaki District Council.
