In 2025, eleven artists living and working in te rohe o Waitaki, at the time of invitation, were asked to contribute to a group show alongside a guest artist of their choosing. Emphasising the role of community within art making, Karanga i te Hoa (Phone a Friend) initiated an opportunity for invited artists to consider the role of collectivism and community collaboration within their creative practices. Some artists selected their guests based on existing relationships, while others chose them based on admiration or aspirations. The possibilities within this exhibition concept were open-ended - developing and adapting in ways that suited the invited artist and their guest. The shared objectives varied between each duo, and so too did the outcomes.
