Painted landscape of Old Oamaru windmill

The arrival of influential European artists to Aotearoa New Zealand in the late 1800s-early 1900s introduced contemporary artistic developments that offered new ways of engaging with local landscapes. Once established here, these artists paved the way for a level of regionalism that identified a distinct creative language unique to this country.
