Ōamaru's Little Blue Penguin - A presentation by Dr Philippa Agnew

  • After first being excluded from the Ōamaru Harbour quarry, the little blue penguins have thrived in Ōamaru.
  • Now, the penguins are well-protected, and long-term monitoring of their breeding shows them to be very successful.
  • The Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony and its research programme have become nationally and internationally recognised.

Philippa has worked at the Penguin Colony for almost 14 years, in a role that is research and environment focused.  Her PhD work examined the foraging behaviour of the penguins, and this research is ongoing.  Prior to working at the Penguin Colony, she worked at the Royal Albatross Centre and carried out a Master's degree studying the little blue penguins at Taiaroa Head.
