This instalment of Riveting Reads come to you from Assistant Youth Librarian Kerrie Gamble.

No one is entirely certain what brings the Emperor Sikander to Shalingar. Until now, the idyllic kingdom has been immune to his many violent conquests. To keep the visit friendly, Princess Amrita has offered herself as his bride, sacrificing everything to save her people. But her offer isn't enough.
The unthinkable happens, and Amrita finds herself a fugitive, utterly alone but for an oracle named Thala, who was kept by Sikander as a slave and managed to escape amid the chaos of a palace under siege. With nothing and no one else to turn to, Amrita and Thala are forced to rely on each other. But while Amrita feels responsible for her kingdom and sets out to warn her people, the newly free Thala has no such ties. She encourages Amrita to go on a quest to find the fabled Library of All Things, where it is possible for each of them to reverse their fates. To go back to before Sikander took everything from them.
Stripped of all that she loves, caught between her rosy past and an unknown future, will Amrita be able to restore what was lost, or does another life—and another love—await?

Aditi Khorana has created a well-crafted novel that transports the reader into the lush world of Indian folklore. The novel begins with the parable of the land of trees which sets the tone for the entire novel. Familiar elements from different religions are woven into this gorgeous world with a fun new take on those ideas. ‘Library of Fates’ has a historical backdrop with references to ancient civilisations such as Anatolia and the Silk Road. The complexity of the folklore and its romantic twist will engage readers on many levels as they explore ideas about fate, destiny, the path not taken and some commentary of refugees and loss. This lush opulent world is atmospheric and populated by an endearing heroine. This well-crafted novel leaves no questions unanswered and although Amrita’s story takes an unexpected path it is a satisfying and breathtaking read.

Khorana has created extremely likable characters in this breathtaking story. The main characters, Amrita and Thala, undertake both physical and mental journeys throughout this novel that will change their live forever. Amrita is a selfless and privileged yet still relatable with her teenage ideologies and naiveté however she is also strong and cautious. She takes an extremely phenomenal internal journey throughout the story. She starts out with everything she could ever want then one by one those things are taken from her. However throughout her physical journey she gains worthier things. Thala is the complete opposite of Amrita, she starts off with literally nothing not even her freedom then begins to gain everything she has ever wanted. She has no regrets about her actions and comes from painful beginnings. The interactions between these two characters are the best part of the novel and allows you to experience both sides of this lush world.

An excellent balance of heartbreak, action and mystery made this hard to put down!
