Current Reads: A Year of Marvellous Ways

A Year of Marvellous Ways

This installment of Current Reads comes to you from our Community Services/Deputy Manager Jean Rivett.

Her current read is A Year of Marvellous Ways by Sarah Winman. You can find this book on the fiction shelves at Oamaru Library.

Stories and memories.  This is a “marvellous” book that affirms the love in living and the healing power of storytelling.

It is set in 1947 and the war has ended.  One soldier, Drake, has been delayed in returning home in part by his grief and the memories of horrors seen and committed.  His promise to another soldier who is dying is the catalyst that brings him back.  It is a letter to the dying man’s father who is a doctor in rural Cornwall.

At the same time an ancient woman, Marvellous Ways, is waiting for something but she doesn’t know what it is she waits for.

I was enthralled by Sarah Winman’s ecstatic use of descriptive language.  I found myself rereading sentences to let the words and their pictures soak in.  The author’s characters are strong, earthy and vividly portrayed.

Marvellous Ways, the book, combines the deepest sorrows with abundant joys and the welding of unexpected friendships. What’s more there is suspense and a terrific pull that did not allow me to put it down for a moment and that left me longing for more.
